Description
The home of Riesling HOCHGEWÄCHS is the Ockfener Scharzberg, on the banks of the Saar. With its individual character, fine body and distinctive breed, the Saar-Riesling is a special jewel. The profound fruitiness and the abundance of its bouquet give our tall plant breed and class.
Together with our oenologists, we are proud to have met the high quality requirements in every harvest since the introduction of the legal quality term HOCHGEWÄCHS in 1986 and thus to achieve that our Riesling can carry the name HOCHGEWÄCHS.
When the Romans first came to the Saar via Burgundy and Lorraine 2,000 years ago, they found Celtic Treverians there who were already involved in viticulture. The more wine-savvy Romans refined the methods and planted vines on a large scale. Some of the most expensive and famous wines in the world come from wineries on the Saar.
Saar Riesling & Schiefer – a brilliant combination!
The slate rock on the Saar slopes is a good heat store. At night it releases the sun’s stored power during the day and mitigates temperature fluctuations. The slate also shapes the taste and gives the Saar-Riesling its unmistakable breed and unique character. The long growing time of this grape variety with late ripening into November favors the enrichment with fine fruit aromas. The grapes are not only small, but also low-yielding.
